Angels possess the ability to affect human physical bodies (in good and bad ways). They can heal or cause sickness and inflict serious pestilences upon mankind and even animals. Moreover, they can give supernatural strength and abilities. One telling scriptural proof of this is the story of Lot in Genesis. In this story, the bible said angels of God “smote the men of Sodom with blindness” (Genesis 19:11). The eyes are a part of the human body and the angels used their powers to make the men of Sodom blind, influencing them to the point where they couldn’t see.

 

Unclean spirits, fallen angels, have been recorded as possessing individuals and doing things to their bodies. In Mark 5:2-4 we find there was “a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:  because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him,” Notice how this man likely received supernatural strength from the unclean spirit? This strength made him burst chains that were placed upon him. Amazing! There is also the shocking instance of a man being possessed by a spirit found in Mark. Mark 9:17,18 reads “And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away”. Later, this possessed man was blessed, as Jesus rebuked the spirit and commanded him to get out of the man: “When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him” (Mark 9:25, 26). The spirit, while it was in this man, did much to him. For example, the father of the man said the man was possessed by the spirit since he was a child and said that often times the spirit “cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him:” (Mark 9:22). Clearly, the spirit had full control of this man’s body Also, realize that the spirit caused the man to foam at the mouth and gnash his teeth. His teeth and his mouth are all parts of his body, and they were under the demon’s influence. He couldn’t even speak. So without doubt, angels can influence the body of mankind.

 

One more good example is found in 2 King 19:35: “And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.” Here it is recorded that an angel of God was granted power to attack some Assyrians and this one angel was so powerful that it killed the bodies of one hundred and eighty-five thousand individuals. One angel did this! This story intimates that they certainly have tremendous ability to do things to human bodies.

 

The above listed examples tell us that spirits can influence the body of humans. It mentioned that humans can even be possessed by them. This possession may be so great that the individual no longer has any control over their actions but has to surrender to the will of the spirit. Good angels have made men blind, and even destroyed the bodies of men, as we saw. And on the other hand, evil angels have made men, dumb, deaf, strong, and even caused them to foam at the mouth. What power!

 

The truth is, mankind is no match for spirits and clearly spirits are amongst men. The question this begs to be asked is, “What should mankind do about this?” Well, having God and the good spirits on their side is the best option. For, clearly, the Son of God, Jesus, has authority over evil spirits and good angels work on God’s behalf as they “excel in strength” and “do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word” (Psalm 103:20). Therefore, evil angels are no match for God and his army. God in his love reaches out to the world and desires to be in the life of each person, providing much needed protection from evil angelic beings.
